Young audiences
For very young children in nurseries and daycare (ages 0-3), I focus on familiar nursery rhymes, singing along as I accompany myself on the harp. I alternate between short solo harp pieces—classical or Celtic—and gentle or upbeat songs. I vary the rhythms and activities to keep their little ears captivated.
I use various harp techniques to explore different sounds: I invite the children to play with me, using the instrument's soundboard as percussion, creating glissandos, playing melodies on the strings, and helping me move the harp's levers. The children are active participants by my side. I also bring small maracas, bells, and ribbons so they can join in the music-making.
We alternate between dynamic, danceable music and melodies that invite them to lie down and find calm. I don't expect children to sit perfectly still for an hour: everyone is free to move around while listening to the music. This isn't a formal concert, but a participatory workshop.
I usually perform in nurseries / childminder groups (MAM) between 10 a.m. and 11 a.m., but it is also possible to organise the session later in the day, for example so parents can be present. Each organisation decides whether they prefer small groups of children or a session in the common room for everyone at the same time — I adapt accordingly.
For older children, the principle remains the same, but I go deeper into the discovery and presentation of the instrument: its history, its mysteries, and how it works. I offer a real Q&A exchange and spend more time exploring musical techniques.
I perform classical and Celtic works, popular songs, and well-known children's tunes they can sing with me, as well as my own compositions. I invite the children to request songs if they wish and to discover, touch, and play the harp, its strings, and its resonance.
